Kate and I did the "tourist thing" and spent a day in Washington, D.C. visiting a number of museums at the Smithsonian Institute. And all for free. We started early in the morning, knowing there was so much to take in. The day was sweltering hot and humid, typical for Washington at that time of the year. We paced ourselves, lingered at favorite spots, had a leisurely lunch and spent time talking to people. In the evening we took in a Bluegrass concert, part of a musical festival going on at the mall which included Appalachian, Mali and Scottish music. As the band heated up (literally), a number of people got up to dance on the space provided. There were some older couples that obviously knew what they were doing as their intricate steps kept time to the music, younger couples dancing the Irish jig, women swinging each other round and round. Then there were the children, just up there having a good time, and dads and moms picking THEM up swinging them round and round. As I looked around at the faces, I was struck by the sense of community I felt within this microcosm of humanity. I thought about the day we had spent in Washington, the fact the here we were-people of all shapes, sizes, colors-and how easy it was to connect with each other, enjoy the day and just have fun. I thought to myself, "This could be Guelph", the place I now call "home" and which is one of those caring communities that seems so comfortable to be a part of. But no, this was Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States of America and this is happening right here. This kind of news doesn't get into the papers, but I want you to know that it exists. So go to Washington, D.C. and enjoy! And, yes, the Smithsonian is always free. A Great Way to Travel For those of us who are over 50 and love to travel on a shoestring, here is a great way to get wonderful, very inexpensive accommodations and meet interesting people. The Evergreen Club offers reciprocating Bed and Breakfast Accommodations to its members. The network is worldwide. Here is how it works. For $75.00 (U.S.) per year you and your spouse (or companion) become a member and have access to the listing of participating members. Wherever you travel, you contact a host family ahead of time and book your room. You pay $15.00 (U.S.) per night per couple. We used this service and had nothing but amazing experiences. Or accommodations were great; we were given the "royal treatment" for breakfast, and met very generous, open people, all who led very interesting lives. Website: www.evergreenclub.com |
